Tomorrow was going to be the first New Year celebration
after coming out of hostel. Apart from my roommates there were few other
friends who had gathered at our room. We were all planning to celebrate it at
the Marina Beach, the second longest beach in the world. So as dusk neared we
started on our journey. Few of our classmates assured to meet us at the beach
itself. Boarding the 21G bus we were heading towards our destination. Finding
somewhat around 2 hours for the clock to struck 00.00 am we planned to roam in
at the City Centre Mall, Dr.Radhakrishnan Salai, Mylapore. One can easily spend his/her
time at the malls always and it is even one of the reasons why it’s been
constructed for. From the terrace of the mall with the Bay of Bengal behind us
and the cool sea breeze on us we guys were enjoying. I could remember of the
incident happened then, Aravind one of my classmate rang up to my mom. He
informed her that I was in relationship with a girl. My mom knew that he was
trying to fool her so she carefully handled the situation and it was of a great
laughter among us guys.
Time was about 11.15 pm and slowly every crowd moved towards
the beach. Already there was a huge gathering waiting to celebrate. We found
rest of our classmates and gathered in a big circle somewhat nearby to the
shore whistling, dancing, screaming, singing. There were also huge Police
patrol to prevent any misbehaviour and other illegal activities from happening.

As the clock crossed 00.00am, the celebrations started. I
have never ever witnessed it ever before in my life. The celebration of our
gang got even wilder since it was our friend Mr. Aravamudhan’s birthday. Slowly
the crowd started to leave. Our only mode of reaching room was City bus but we
came to know that at around 12.45 am no city bus runs. The alternate option was
by train and on reaching Light House station we came to know that the first
service starts by 4.30 only. We had no other options. Rukesh who was
accompanying us suggested us to come and stay at his home. We thought
disturbing Rukesh’s parents at this time wouldn’t be fair. The only option left
to us was by Walk.
We started on our walk. There was complete Police patrol
round the city so we found it quite safe to walk. The first stop after a long
walk was at an ice cream parlor nearby to the American Consulate. The owner of
the shop informed us that you could find night services bus at DMS bus stop on
the Anna Salai. So proceeding towards DMS bus stop all the way we had photo
shoots with Mr. Sreenivas as the photographer. On entering the bus stop a
jam-packed night service bus crossed us.
We decided that it would be of no use in waiting for the
bus. Aravind suggested that at Mambalam Bus Depot we could find the first bus
and the time to reach there would equalize with the departure of that bus.
Agreeing to the plan we started off towards T.Nagar. Walking through the
deserted streets of Chennai during night is a different feel. So walking
through different streets we finally reached Panagal Park. Aravind told us that
the bus terminus was only few kilometers ahead. Finally reaching the Mambalam
bus terminus by 4.45 am we halted outside a tea shop opened there. By around
5.15 am the first bus to Perungalathur rolled out which would take us to
Chrompet. Boarding the bus, getting the tickets we all went into sleep
straight. We walked towards our room still sleepy only to find the entire world
waking up to have a nice year ahead.
So the year for me and my friends started off with that long
walk.
